First Rain, Brise Soleil is a moving image work that extends the artist’s poetic exploration of Vietnam’s Mekong region through layered histories and storytelling. Told through a fictional first-person narrative, the film traces the life of a construction worker specializing in brise-soleil, linking vernacular craftsmanship to concrete modernism and its association with US imperial influence. A second narrative unfolds through an 18th-century folkloric love story set against feudal conflict, centered on the symbolic durian fruit. Moving between urban Saigon and the Mekong Delta, the work reflects on violence, memory, love, and ecological fragility, proposing a gentler vision of modernity rooted in indigenous knowledge. The installation is accompanied by a drawing of Al Qasimiyah School exploring modernism and pedagogy.
